Alonzo Mourning, former NBA star, established the “Alonzo Mourning Charities,” which sought to improve the academic achievement of at-risk children. After being diagnosed with the rare kidney disease glomerulosclerosis, Mourning began his “Zo’s fund for Life” campaign, which supports kidney research and provides financial assistance to those diagnosed with kidney-related diseases. As a tribute to his campaign, the 2009 Florida law expanding insurance coverage to kidney transplants was named the “Alonzo Mourning Access to Care Act.”
